Video Analytics for Retail
CV-based video analytics system for analyzing shopper behavior in retail chains. 18% conversion increase.
Challenge
A large retail chain lacked objective data on customer behavior in stores. Decisions about product placement, navigation, and floor layout were based on intuition and fragmented observations. Marketing couldn't measure the actual effectiveness of promo zones and displays. Existing security cameras were only used for surveillance, despite containing vast amounts of shopper behavior data.
Solution
A video analytics system powered by computer vision was deployed on top of the existing surveillance infrastructure. The system tracks customer flows in real-time, builds heatmaps of movement patterns, records dwell time in specific zones, and identifies dead zones and attraction points. Algorithms calculate conversion: the ratio of visitors to buyers. An analytical dashboard compares the effectiveness of different layouts and promotions. All data is anonymized — the system does not identify individual shoppers.

Technologies
Approach
Audit of existing surveillance infrastructure
Evaluating camera placement, resolution, and coverage to determine system capabilities.
Tracking and counting model development
Building computer vision models for real-time customer tracking and counting.
Analytical dashboard creation
Developing a dashboard with heatmaps, conversion metrics, and layout effectiveness comparisons.
Pilot in 3 stores, then network-wide rollout
Testing the system in pilot locations before scaling across the entire retail chain.
